What is a Doula? A Doula is a birth support person who provides physical, emotional and informed support to the woman and her partner before, during and after the birth.
Marietje is a registered nurse having completed a module in maternity nursing. Marietje supports woman and partner before, during and after childbirth.
Continuous support is given during labour and birthing using massage, acupressure and relaxation techniques. Partners are supported to participate with confidence, creating bonds between father and the baby.
Advantages of Having a Doula
Having a Doula present has shown to shorten first time labour by 2 hours, decrease the chance of a caesarean and lessen the level of anxiety. Support is given in the hospital or home.
"If a Doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it." - from the video Giving Birth: Challenges and Choices - Suzanne Arms
